Yama

Yama

Born and raised on the tiny Caribbean island of Anguilla, Rameesh Richardson goes by the stage moniker 'Yama'. He was once the lead singer in a band on the island known as 'Betta Vibez' from 2011 but has since transitioned to a solo soca artiste. Growing up, Yama looked up to the likes of the late Daddy Friday, Daddy Hodgie, the late Kylo and Kes The Band. Although Yama performs both power and groovy soca, with sleek vocals and extensive vocal range, this has made groovy soca his favourite.

In 2019, Yama released , “Buss It” which can be described as a homegrown creation as it was written by Anguillian Writers and produced by Anguillian Producer Cherrod Lewis (CL Productions). The song quickly became a favourite on the island of Anguilla and has made its way around some of the Leeward Islands. Since then, he has teamed up with Trinidadian Producer Mevon Sooden (xplicitmevon) and Trinidadian song writers to produce groovy soca singles , “Replay” , “Plus One” and “Something Good”. In July 2022, “Plus One” was featured on Apple Music’s ‘Global Hits’ List.  He has also worked with other producers like ShakerHD Productions and Tre Otto of the USVI.

Yama captured the Power Soca Monarch title during the Anguilla Summer Festival in August 2022 . He competed in Soca Monarch yet again in 2023 but this time around, he placed first runner up in both the power and groovy segments. In April 2024, Yama represented Anguilla in a cultural exchange for Anguilla as an ambassador. He performed live at the opening of St.Thomas Carnival in the USVI. This was definitely a milestone in his career and he’s looking forward to performing at other international events.
